Every call starts the same way: tell us what you need and where you are, and ask for the price before anyone comes out. Depending on the job, a few things help.

Locked out.
- Where you are, and what you're locked out of: house, car or business.
- Something that shows you belong there: photo ID with the address, a lease or a piece of mail, or the vehicle registration. Any real locksmith will ask.

Car key or remote.
- The year, make and model.
- Whether you still have a key, and whether it has a chip (a transponder: the chip inside most modern car keys).
- The VIN, and the registration or title. Photo ID.

Rekey or new locks.
- How many doors.
- The brand name on the face of the lock.
- All the keys you have.
- Whether you own or rent. Renters, get the owner's OK first.

Safe.
- The make and model, if you can find it.
- A photo of the dial or keypad.
- Something that shows the safe is yours.
